To convert the Gregorian year to the AUC year just take the Gregorian year and add 753. Basically AUC dates don’t count up from year 0 on our calendar, the count up from year 753 BC(when Rome was founded). ![]() AUC-Ab Urbe Condita-From the founding of the city. The Romans never used it themselves, but it is based on the chronology of the Roman founding myth. Obviously there were no consuls in the year you were born, so you could either pick two guys you like, orrrrr use the AUC dating system. The year is named based on the Consuls for that year for example 59BC is referred to as “The year Gaius Julius Caesar and Marcus Calpurnius Bibulus were consuls”. As I said, and as you prolly already know, the Roman’s don’t use numbered years. So if ur birthday is March 21, it would read “XXI Martius.” If your birthday is on a named day, for example the 15th it would be like “Ides Martii” Instead, have the day in numerals(unless you are born on the Kalends,Nones, or Ides: if born on one of these use the name not the number) followed by the month written out. My reccomendation would be that you avoid using Roman numerals seperated by a sign, because the Roman’s never fuckin did that. So the 1st of each month was called the “Kalends”, the 5th or 7th day(depending on which month) is called the “Nones” and the 13th or 15th is called the “ides”. Additionally the Roman’s have a number of “named” days whereby the name of the day is used instead of the number. Even in epigraphy you will see “3rd day of Martius” as opposed to the 3/3 we use for March 3rd. The Romans never used numbered years, nor did they use month/day shorthand. You CANNOT translate our dates into “Roman” ones. So I agree with everyone, you shouldn’t get this tattoo, but if your mind is absolutely made up there are some things you should know. ![]()
